On the very first moment at the registration desk, I found Dr. Prabu Ramachandran, from IIT Bombay. He is the founder of my alma mater, Indian Linux Users Group, Chennai. He was so happy to hear that the group is still active and monthly meetings are going regularly. Tons of thanks for your great initiatives sir. With ILUGC only, we are reaching gaining more knowledge and getting more longtime friends.
My first ILUGC meet
For the first time, I saw the KDE India team. There were 5 young kde contributors showing KDE, Krita, Plasma Mobile, Kde Connect and other KDE features. I am a KDE user for around 10 years, I felt like meeting family friends. I spent much time in the stall. Thanks KDE team. I am so happy to meet you all.
One fine day, I was deep in my office work, Suddenly I got a ping from shrini [1] in #ilugc [2] asking me to take a look at this issue [3]. At first, I thought well, it is a simple change, why we need to write a whole new layout for this simple change. But then shrini insisted that even if it is a simple change, People who were not able to do that simple change are looking for a solution for long time. So, I said to myself, if that is the case, then lets create one.
A long time ago, I started contributing to LibreOffice by raising a few bugs. After a while, as I had the opportunity to meet a number of youngsters and graduates, I started introducing them to LibreOffice. Once they started using LibreOffice, it became very easy for us to get them involved in LibreOffice QA (Quality Assurance) related of activities. Thus, we started conducting few offline and online trainings. A few links about them are here, here and in this video.
Where there are challenges, there are also opportunities. Hence, our easiest opportunity is creating awareness about open source first, and then ask them to use a FOSS operating system. (Linux Mint is a good start for Beginners.) Once they adopt the operating system (dual-booting is also fine for us), every other FOSS ddoption will automatically follow, including LibreOffice.
Abhishek Yadav is one of the organizers forChennai.rb andChennai JS meetup groups. In most othercities, these would be opposing groups / factions, but not Chennai. Hefrequents Chennaipy, and I had been at Chennai.rb a couple oftimes. Before 2018, the two of us would call each other from time totime, and mull around the idea of doing a conference inChennai. Finally, we got to do PySangamam 2018, and we followed it byPyCon India 2019. Abhishek Yadav along with Naren lead the CFP effortof the conference.
Rajkumar is from Trichy and incidentally is from my alma mater, NITTrichy. We first got introduced outside college, when he had travelledall the way from Trichy to Chennai, to attend the Chennaipy meetup. Aspart of the promotion workgroup, Rajkumar had been interacting andworking with college students, to promote the event. He had alsocontributed to badge design and printing, certificate design, bannerdesign and handling the poster session.
Ramanathan belongs to the Hyderabad Python User Group, and I first methim, when I did a workshop for PyConf Hyderabad. After that HydPy wenton to run PyCon India 2018. During the conference, Ram encouraged meto take up PyCon India 2019, and he was willing to offer hissupport. I was reluctant at that point, because the scale of theconference looked huge and I was not very sure if we would be able todo it.
Rengaraj was an ex-colleague at the company I work for, ZilogicSystems. He has always been supportive and very concerned aboutChennaipy, ever since I took over as the its organizer. He immenselycontributed to promoting PyCon India 2019. Rengaraj also acted as awatchdog, monitoring the CFP, ticketing platform and website, andwould be the first to notice when anything goes wrong. He also offeredexcellent hospitality to the keynote speakers, and ensured theirtravel and stay was pleasant.
Sharmila is a regular attendee at the the Chennaipy meetups. When wecontacted her to lead the diversity workgroup, she readily agreed. Shealong with the support of volunteers, helped out with the reaching outto more women speakers, helped in crafting and implementing theaccessibility guidelines, arranging for childcare and PyLadies lunch.
Shrayas Rajagopal has been instrumental in shaping Chennaipy to whatit is today. I first met him as a speaker at ILUGC, and then we was aregular speaker at the Chennaipy meetups. He was also instrumental inmaking PySangamam happen. He joined the bandwagon, little late forPyCon India 2019, and took care of the video recordings, and chairedone of the conference tracks.
Sivasubramanyam is the organizer of theChennai Astronomy Club. My firstencounter with Siva was when he suggested an improvement to theChennaipy website, where he corrected the color of the Twitterlogo. He sure had an eye for design and perfection. As part of thedesign workgroup, he was instrumental in refining the logo design, maintaining the website and creating social media posters and otherartwork.

Events like EmacsConf are a great place to meet Emacs users around theworld. You get to learn about new ideas, workflows, packages, and makenew friends as well What if I tell you that you can meet fellow Emacsusers more frequently, that too in your region/time zone? Yes, meetupgroups!
[00:00:00.000] Hello everyone, welcome to my talk.I hope you all have beenenjoying EmacsConf so far, like I am.But you might be wondering,"How do I meet fellow Emacs usersafter the conference?"What if I tell you there is a way?The answer is local meetups. These are user groups who arrange eventsat some frequency, they meet at some frequency. That's what we are going to talk about today:attending and organizing Emacs meetups. In other words, enjoying your Emacs journeywith more folks!I am Bhavin, I am from India, and I have been organizingEmacs Asia Pacific meetupsince last few months [almost 2 years].We will be talking about online meetupsmost of the time. The beauty of online meetups is,you can join any meetupsif the time permits,if the time zone is same. And there is no barrier. So let's get started.
[00:01:10.120] Let's see how a meetup looks like.We will see one of the Emacs APAC meetup'ssnippet, basically. So, it's like this org-adapt-indentationwhich is like electric indent.Like when you press enter, it will indent. There is org-indent-mode, which does not require youto actually make the indents physicallyin the file.It will make things appear indented. This one?Yeah.Okay.Looks interesting, right? So, let's get into more details.
[00:02:08.320] You might have a question:"Why I should attend meetups?"That's a good question. You should always ask "why".It's an opportunity to learn together. You basically meet like-minded people,like-minded Emacs users, and you can always have fun, right?
[00:02:56.800] "I am an experienced user."I would say that's even betterbecause you can help othersduring the meetup. And usually, in Emacs or in general, there is always something new to learn. There are plenty of packages. There might be somethingyou have never tried. And there are always going to bedifferent workflows of using something.
[00:03:16.160] So now, how do I become part of a meetup, right?"How do I become part of a meetup group?"The first step you might be doing isfinding a meetup. There is this page,EmacsWiki page called Usergroups, currently maintainedby Leo and Sacha. So, let's see how that page looks like.As you can see, this page tells youabout all the upcoming events. And it also has a list of all the meetup groups. So, you can find all the groups there.
[00:04:10.000] Once you find one,you need to join them, right? How to join differs from group to groupbut usually you will find a way to subscribeto their mailing list or RSS feed, join their IRC channels. They might have accounts on some platformslike Mobilizon or meetup.com.You can just go there and join,so that you get notifiedwhenever there is a new event.
[00:05:33.200] "How do I make most of it?If I am attending a meetup, how do I make most of it?"I would say never hesitatefrom asking questions. If there is something new, something you don't understand, just go ahead and ask questions.Ask for help if you are stuck somewhere. There are going to be new things,so make sure you note them down, and you can try those later. If possible, have a microphone or webcam on,so that you can connect with others very easily. If that's not an option for some reason,it's fine, you can always use chatand interact with everyone. So, don't make that a reason for not attending.Go ahead and attend, even if you just have chat as an optionto interact with others."Wait, I still have questions."Definitely.If you have more questions,go ahead and post those.I will come to them at the end.Now we know how to attend, what are the things you need to doif you want to attend. 2ff7e9595c
